After a long day of traveling in matatus, we finally made it to Tororo in one piece. Tororo is a lot bigger than Nyaoga (which isn't even a village, more like a hill) so it was nice to be somewhere with a few more amenities... like internet cafes and restaurants... and flushing toilets. We spent the first few days meeting with the Give Us Wings staff, Danis and Lawi, about the bookkeeping and the rest of the time was spent touring the groups GUW supports.
The GUW staff house and office, where we are staying.
Our friendly housemate.
Next door to us is a nursery school. One Saturday at 6:30 in the morning they were louder than usual and we found out the hard way that they were having their graduation ceremony- complete with a marching band.
The band outside our gate.
Will fitting comfortably in the full sized bed (the blue thing is our mosquito net).
Lawi cooking sukuma wiki over a kerosene stove. Most people use either kerosene or charcoal burners (or just a hole in the ground and some sticks). Rich people may have propane or electric stovetops and ovens are rare. We learned how to use the "traditional methods" because we didn't have a cook! So it was up to us and Lawi to figure out the meals.
I had a craving for Mexican food, so we did the best we could with African ingredients. This is rice, pinto beans, and fried vegetables wrapped in a chipati. Not bad.
Home entertainment: hanging on a fence and making your little brother swing it back and forth. The two girls on the left are Danis's kids and the girl on the right is our neighbor, Pet.
Me and Petronella, i.e. my little Pet.
