ARRIVAL IN NYAOGA

We arrived in Nyaoga on Sunday night and met Elijah, the project coordinator for Give Us Wings in Nyaoga and his wife Sally, who is the director of the clinic. A 9-month old boy named Nicky completes their family. The first week we toured many of the projects and met with the community groups.

The medical clinic in the compound where we are staying. Give Us Wings helped the Nyaoga community build it because the nearest hospital is quite far. The majority of sicknesses are due to polluted water from Lake Victoria. GUW is currently working on a major water project to pipe in clean water to the community.

A man herding his cattle, which is a common sight on the roads.

A view of the countryside from the compound.

Some 8th grade schoolboys. We taught English in the 7th and 8th grade classrooms a few times a week. The 8th graders just took their exams to get into secondary school.
A couple who are practicing organic farming. This is kale/ sakuma wiki, a staple food in Kenya.

Judy, the lady who has trained people in the community in organic farming practices, with some children at a farm. Right now they are growing indiginous plants but will expand to commercial crops next year.
A woman and her son in their organic garden.

One of the children we passed on our way who wouldn't stop smiling and following us.
A man transporting firewood on his bike.
