NYAOGA WOMEN’S GROUP, NYAOGA

We affectionately refer to it as the “Old Women’s Group,” to distinguish it from the “Young Women’s Group.” It is the original group in Nyaoga, from which other groups and projects have branched off. Right now, their main projects are learning how to raise poultry to generate income and distributing grain to HIV positive people in the community which they received from a grant. They are also helping facilitate the building of a maternity ward on the clinic/dispensary.
These are some of the “Mamas” in a general meeting. Any woman with a child is considered a “Mama,” but it especially refers to older women. Most women are eager for me to join the “Mama” ranks, and I have been told that if I was married as long as I’ve been (1.5 years) in Kenya without bearing my husband a child, I’d be replaced by a new wife!
This is one of the head group members, Angeline, leading a dance.
The women performed a drama they created about AIDS for us.
The married woman in the play collected several boyfriends when she went into the fish-selling business, so that her supplier and seller would give her a good deal.
After the drama, it was time for more dancing!
They’re a dynamic bunch.
