HOME LIFE IN NYAOGA

I just wanted to add a few pictures of where we are living and the surroundings in Nyaoga.

This is the staff house where we are staying in the clinic/dispensary compound. You can kind of see Lake Victoria on the horizon.

OUR HOUSEMATES:

This is Elijah next to the sign for the clinic/dispensary which lists all the services they offer. They have recently applied for a grant to bring anti-retroviral treatment for AIDS to the community.

This is Sally and baby Nicky.
This is Mary, the housekeeper, making chipati. Chipati is kind of like a cross between tortillas and naan and it is Will's absolute favorite dish in Kenya.

Chickens and roosters hang out around the house. This rooster sits outside our window cackling every morning at 6:30.

Will's nemasis: fish. They will serves these whole, heads and all.
Chickens sometimes wander into the house until someone shoos them out. We were watching TV and an egg came rolling out from under it!

"The Girl"- this is one of the 8th grade students who is also distantly related to Elijah and has been hanging around the house for the past week, helping out with cooking and Nicky, teaching us how to handwash our clothes. We really like her but we don't know her name!!!
Will and I taking our breakfast and trying to play pseudo-Boggle with Scrabble pieces.

The Girl and other kids who hang around and sometimes stay at the house.

  1. Rachel, I just love the addition of photos. It brings the experience so close! Thanks for being such a visual and vocal addition to this journal. I look forward to the virtual journey as well. May god hold you close. Be safe.

  2. Hi Will and Rachel!
Life looks fairly exciting and interesting for you both! I was thinking about you guys today when I drove down Hawthorne past the Break and Ink cafe... It was really sunny here today for some reason, but you're definitely not missing anything else but rain and cold :) We miss you both but are doing well.. we all have jobs pretty much and Matt is working hard on his classes. I hope you guys have a great Thanksgiving (we'll think of you!); we'll be eating loads at church and knitting afterwards - the girls, at least. take care! Jen and Matt and the house
